Penelope Dinwiddy, although not academically educated in Fine Art, had spent many years under Nicholas Fondle R.A. eagerly imbibing everything he cared to offer her. She soon became proficient in nude painting and nude sculpting, although much to Fondle’s great amusement she had originally believed that it was the model who should be nude and not the artist, something they often laughed about while he was drilling her each evening.

In March, 1840, her aunt, Lady Gertrude Knappagh, informed Penelope, albeit to her great surprise, that she had received her first commission: a commemorative statue for Prince Albert's newly founded 69th Tight Corsets.
